
| Patrolman Timothy F. Donovan November 13th, 1942 Officer Donovan was struck by a car while working at a motor vehicle accident on the Northern Artery Bridge. He was transported by Police Ambulance to Massachusetts General Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Officer Donovan was a 6 year veteran of the SPD, and is the First known SPD Officer to die in the line of duty. Officer Donovan's death was recently discovered when it was reported to the SPD by a family friend. SPD Captain John O'Connor researched old Department Journals and found the 1942 entry reporting Officer Donovan's death. Future updates will follow as more information becomes available. |

| Patrolman Michael Dowd, Jr. June 24th, 1947 Officer Dowd died on June 24th, 1947 after being shot in the line of duty 12 days earlier by an intoxicated man he was questioning. Officer Dowd had been checking the door and windows of a liquor store on Highland Avenue when he came across the subject. While being questioned, the man suddenly produced a gun and shot Officer Dowd in the side of the abdomen. The suspect fled the scene as Officer Dowd made his way to a call box. He was able to report the incident, as well as the suspects description, to responding officers. The subject was able to escape and was never identified or apprehended. Officer Dowd was transported to Somerville Hospital, where he died 12 days later. Officer Dowd was a WWI veteran and had served with the Somerville Police Department for 27 years. |

| Officer Henry A. Lord July 24th, 1945 Officer Lord Served with the Somerville Police Department as a Traffic Officer in Davis Square from 1939 to 1942, until he went on active military Duty. On July 24, 1945 his ship, the USS Underhill, was sunk by a Japanese submarine in the Western Pacific Theater. Officer Lord, a machinist's mate, first class, and 111 fellow crew members were lost. Officer Lord was 39 years old. Officer Lord's death was overlooked until Somerville Police Officer Michael Wyatt found Officer Lord's picture in an old Police Department annual. Department members took up a collection to purchase a plaque to memorialize him, which is located in the lobby of the Public Safety Building. The corner of Holland Street and Cameron Avenue in Somerville is named in his memory. The SAPD was proud to assist with the dedication ceremony. | Lieutenant John J. Jones June 7th, 2005 Lt. Jones passed away June 7th, 2005 after a battle with Cancer. He was 62 years old. Lt. Jones started his law enforcement career with the SAPD many years ago. He is survived by his wife and children, one of whom is a Police Officer in Revere, MA. |

| Detective Daniel Ryan August 16th, 2005 Detective Ryan passed away August 16th 2005, ending his battle with cancer. He served the Somerville Police Department since 1976, and served with the US Army in Vietnam. Detective Ryan is survived by his 3 children. |
